From the Flight Club:

" One hundred and ninety floors up, you look over the edge of the roof and the street below is mottled with a shaggy carpet of people, standing and looking up. The breaking glass is from a window right below us. A wind blows outside of the building, and then comes a file cabinetas big as a black refrigerator."

Hair and Malcolm X

Hair is obviously the focus of " My First Conk," by Malcolm X. Some would say hair is a trivial matter--not worthy of a serious discussion. Based on your reading do you agree or disagree with this statement? Remember to have at least one quote in each paragraph supporting your argument--Remember to introduce quotes--cite them properly- have good transition statements at the head of each body paragraph, and make sure your introduction gives a good road map to how you will approach the paper. Include a conclusion--that will sum up the points that you have made.

Black Elk

In the essay "The Offering of the Pipe" by Black Elk, it is evident that the religion of Black Elk and his tribe is very nature- based. Throughout the essay nature is constantly referred to and it seems to have religious importance.

When Black Elk describes the Great Spirit he invokes animals and nature in general as an integral part of the scheme of things. When he makes an offering to God he mentions " the great cleansing wind  ... whence come the summer and the power to grow." (2). Here there is a strong emphasis on nature and its relationship to the spirit.

The mysterious woman who appeared in Black Elk's story concerning the origin of the pipe --handed a man a pipe with a bison's head carved on it. The pipe was a direct conduit to  the Great Spirit--and a bison was part of that conduit--again conveying the importance of nature in Black Elk's religion.

In summary, nature was an integral part of Black Elk's religion, and was used used to communicate with the Great Spirit.

    *****  Present the Issue

Homelessness is a problem in the city of Boston. According to The Boston Globe there are over 2,000 people on the streets of our city.  A fair percentage of those folks have been displaced from their homes because of the high cost of renting an apartment. I believe a solution to this issue will be to increase the number of low income slots that a developer must provide for new housing permits to be granted.

*****  Talk about the Issue -- make a compelling case
Elaborate on issue. Research you have done—personal anecdotes.
On any given day the Pine Street Inn—a major homeless shelter in the South End of Boston-- is flooded with homeless people. The director, Joe Schwartz states in an interview with The New York Times, “There are not enough beds for all our potential clients… and it is hard to place people because of the exorbitant rents in the city. The average rent in the city of Boston for a residential unit is 2,000 a month…” ( cite)

      ****** Propose your solution
Presently the number of apartments allocated to low income tenants is 2 percent. I propose a 5% jump. According to the Wall Street Journal a 5% percent jump is sufficient to take over 1,000 people off the streets of our city. ( cite—paraphrase)

********* Answer objections to your solution
The Boston Realtor’s Association claims that this will dampen growth in the city. But a study at MIT, from the Urban institute refutes this: “The real estate industry constantly overestimates the negatives on this issue.”

Malcolm X

Malcolm X places a huge  importance on hairstyle as a way society tried to put down the black man.  It seemed in order to be beautiful you must be white, thus straighten your hair. Do you agree or disagree that X's point has been overdone? Use examples from the reading and experiences from your own life. Remember to quote from the reading, and engage the text as well as relating your own experience.

Sample Essay Black Elk

In the article, " Black Elk Speaks: The Offering of the Pipe," Black Elk, a Native American chief, is the polar opposite of our Commander-in-Chief Donald Trump. Unlike Trump, Black Elk has a pervasive sense of modesty and humility.

Donald Trump always touts his accomplishments and rarely admits his mistakes. Elk offers an antidote to this with this statement that deals with his life, " I have made much meat in my time...So have others and have done better than I." (1).

Elk unlike Trump admits that he can be weak just like any man or woman. Here he speaks to God, "This is my prayer, hear me! The voice I have sent is weak..." (6).

In conclusion, Black Elk is a leader who can admit his faults, his failures, his weakness, and admit that he is human like the rest of us. Sadly, Donald Trump lacks these qualities.

Prompt Three: Enemy Relationships as Children

Prompt Three: Enemy Relationships as Children

Write about your characters as children responding to a bitter enemy.
Enemies look very different from childhood to adulthood, but that makes them no less serious. Kids have very distinct ideas about bad people. Those may be serious bullies, or terrible schoolmates, or even someone in their home. This is the person who would, your character knew, leave them to drown in an accident.
The way your character dealt with enemies in their youth has a lot to do with how they deal with them as adults because it involves assumptions about other people’s thoughts and emotions.
It also involves how your characters prepare to defend themselves, emotionally and physically, which is a whole other kettle of fish. “They always___” what? What does your character assume?
